Watch out for bears in Shiretoko

One TV reporter of Taiwan should be ashamed of her report on bears in Shiretoko. She says, "The black bear even stuck to the car to look for the tourist's handout."

Following is the true story,

The tourist illegally parked his rental car at the curve on the highway,
watching the mother bear with her two kids that were 5 meters away from the roadside.

The bears were heading for Sea of Okhotsk.
The mother felt annoyed, because the car stopped her kids from crossing the road safely.
Therefore, she tried to move the car three times.

Look at the photo. What did the mother gaze at?
Her two kids.

As soon as the tourist drove away, the three bears walked to Horobetsu Stream beneath the road.

In fact, all cubs here never leave mother bears until they live independently.

The photo is taken by one nature guide at 14;50, 26, July, 2015.
And I encountered THREE bears at the SAME PLACE, at 16:25, 14, July, 2015.

That afternoon, I took a walk from my favorite Iruka Hotel to Horobetsu Stream, where I had encountered the deer walking on the drift ice this winter.*

Horobetsu Stream was 2 km away from Utoro downtown, but it was located in the world heritage area.*

Where there were street lights was Horobetsu Bridge.
Of course, it was impossible to encounter bears in winter.*

I was so lucky. I encountered bears at the SAME place in SUMMER! "So cute! (kawai~)",

But the Japanese driver stopped to advise me to go back,
"So terrible! (kowai~)"

May I correct the report?
The bears in Shiretoko are not black bears, but brown bears.

Most important of all, A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear!

The news actually originates from NHK.
However, the conclusion of HNK reports is
"Better to manage humans than to manage the bears."

If I were the reporter, I would write...

Dare to park cars illegally in Shiretoko?
Your car will be towed away not by the police, but the bears.

* The photos are taken in winter by my Japanese companion SUU-san.

This September, SUU-san also encountered bears at the same place. Moreover, Suu-san was 3m away from the bear which was eating fish. See how the mother bear trains cubs to catch fish.
